Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about our calculators and FIRE planning.
Are these calculators really free?expand_more
Yes. Every calculator is 100% free with no limits. No account required, no credit card, no trial period. The calculators will always be free.
Where does the ETF data come from?expand_more
We source real dividend history, yields, prices, and fund information from institutional data providers. The data refreshes every weekday at 6 PM ET. We never use made-up numbers or estimates.
What is a FIRE number?expand_more
Your FIRE number is the amount you need saved to live off your investments. A common rule of thumb is 25 times your annual expenses. If you spend $40,000 per year, your FIRE number is $1,000,000.
What's the difference between Coast FIRE and Barista FIRE?expand_more
Coast FIRE means you've saved enough that investment growth alone will reach your retirement goal, so you can stop saving but still need to cover living expenses. Barista FIRE means you've saved enough to supplement with part-time income and still reach your goal.
How does the DRIP toggle work?expand_more
When DRIP (Dividend Reinvestment Plan) is turned on, the calculator assumes your dividends automatically buy more shares. This compounds your income over time. Each quarter's payout buys more shares, so the next quarter's payout is slightly higher.
Why does the projection chart stop at 10 years?expand_more
The free tier shows projections up to 10 years. Pro unlocks 20 and 30-year projections for FIRE planners who think in longer horizons.
What is a safe withdrawal rate?expand_more
The safe withdrawal rate is the percentage of your portfolio you can spend each year in retirement without running out of money. The most commonly cited rate is 4% (the '4% rule'), which historically sustained portfolios for 30+ years.
How many ETFs do you support?expand_more
We track 74 FIRE-relevant ETFs across 11 categories: US total market, dividend growth, high yield, covered call, international, bonds, REITs, sector, growth, small/mid cap, and balanced funds.
